Well – I did it. It wasn’t fast, and it wasn’t pretty, but I ran, jogged, walked and stumbled 26.2 miles of hot London streets, and I can now call myself a marathon runner.
I had set myself three possible time goals – an “ideal” of 5:15, a “desirable” of 5:30, and a “satisfactory” of 5:45. In the end, I managed 5:28:45, so I was bang on target, and very pleased.
I was also very tired. I am still very tired. I expect to be tired for the rest of my life. I am fitter than I have ever been, yet I still want to go to bed at 9.00, and I haven’t managed to run more than 4 miles at once since the big day. Still, I am sure it has helped me bank a few more years of good health, so I am feeling chipper. The accepted wisdom is that it takes one day per mile to recover from a big run, so by the time of the conference I should be back to normal.
The support from Age UK was excellent, and I now have a taste of the services they can provide. I hope someone looks after me as well in my old age as they did on the day. It is a privilege and honour to be able to repay them via my sponsorship monies.
So finally – a big thank you to everyone who supported me, either with kind words or hard cash. I had a blast.
