NHS Leadership Framework Self Assessment Tool

nlc-logoDetails of the new NHS Leadership Framework have recently been announced, including a self-assessment tool to help staff manage their learning and development.

The NHS Leadership Framework is designed to develop the leadership skills of healthcare staff, with the objective of improving patient care and outcomes. The framework has been designed to enable staff to understand their progression as leaders and to support the NHS to foster and develop talent.

The Framework is made up of seven domains which describe leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour. Staff will exhibit a range of leadership behaviours across these seven domains dependent on the context in which they operate, described in four stages.

A number of free resources have been developed as part of the Leadership Framework including a self-assessment tool which will be of particular interest to AHCP members. This tool aims to help all NHS staff manage their own learning and development by assisting them to reflect on which areas of the leadership framework they would like to develop further.

Members might find it helpful to complete the self assessment in a number of situations:

  • Prior to a development discussion / appraisal with your Line Manager / Mentor
  • As a way of understanding your strengths & development areas before attending leadership development programmes / activities
  • 6 – 9 months after completion of the full Leadership Framework 360 tool for you to check on progress of your development areas

Information provided is not stored and remains private to the person using the tool. All AHCP members are invited to download and save this document so they can make use of it when reviewing their personal development plans.
