Engaging housekeeping staff At a time of increasing financial pressures, the NHS as a whole faces a significant challenge in improving efficiency and productivity in order to sustain service excellence. Engaged staff are critical to meeting the challenge and staff engagement is enshrined in the NHS Constitution, which pledges to involve staff, setting out their rights and responsibilities. The July 2009 McLeod Report Engaging for Success set out research findings on staff engagement and productivity across industry sectors including health. In November 2009, NHS Employers stated that ‘engaged staff have higher morale, are more productive and will deliver improved organisational performance’. The recent NHS Health and Wellbeing Review (Boorman) also includes findings on the positive impact of staff engagement and its effect on the health and wellbeing of NHS staff. Based on work undertaken at RD&E, Hazel and Marie will discuss the benefits of involving staff in developing services and improving communication across the Housekeeping Department. Hazel Hedicker, Facilities Service Manager & Marie Taylor, Organisational Development Manager, Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation Trust Hazel Hedicker began her career in Facilities Management over 25 years ago. She joined the NHS in 1994 and took up her current post at the RD&E in March 2000 having previously held the position of Site Services Manager at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Prior to her time with the NHS, Hazel has worked in the hotel and industrial catering sectors. Housekeeping was the service to pilot the ‘staff conversation’ events as part of the RD&E Staff Engagement Strategy. Since starting this work Hazel has developed a keen interest in the theory of staff engagement and the positive impact that this has on staff. She is committed to making further improvements to the way in which she and her management team listen to their staff and ensure that they feel valued and supported. Marie Taylor takes the lead on Staff Engagement for The Trust. She joined the Royal Devon in August 2009 as Organisational Development Manager, after relocating from Scotland to Exeter. Prior to this, Marie worked with the Scottish Government Health Department in various roles including; Regional Service Improvement Manager for 18 weeks Referral to Treatment; Regional Manager, Scottish Primary Care Collaborative; National Training Manager for Patient Focus – Public Involvement. Marie is a champion for staff involvement and staff health and well being and is working on delivering a Staff Engagement Strategy for the Trust. |
